New York is one of the fifty states that make up the federation called the United States of America. It is located in the North East of the US. People from New York are traditionally called New Yorkers. The capital city of New York is Albany but its largest city is the New York City. As of 2014, the population of this city was estimated to be about 8.5 million people which makes the city the most populous in the US. The Metropolitan Area of the New York City ranks among the largest urban agglomerations in the world. The Ellis Island located in the city is historically the prime gateway for immigration into the US.
The New York City ranks as a global power city. The city exerts influence globally in commerce, technology and just about any area of human endeavour. The city ranks as a first class centre for international diplomacy with the headquarters of the United Nations located there. New York occupies a predominant position globally and has been described as the capital of the world for finance and culture. It has also been designated as the most economically powerful city in the world. The city was named in honour of the Duke of York who later became King James II of England in the 17th century.
New York was first explored by Henry Hudson, a European of the Dutch East India Company in the early part of the 17th century while looking for a route to Asia. It was during this voyage and specifically on September 11 of 1609 that Hudson came into the Upper Bay of New York. On returning home his findings generated Dutch interest and presence in the area seeking for lucrative trade in fur. During this century, various Dutch trading positions were established first at Fort Nassau and then at other places such as Fort Orange, Fort Amsterdam, and Esopus. About fifty years after the initial Dutch settlements, the British annexed New York from the Dutch but were forced to relinquish it to the Dutch in 1673 during the third Anglo-Dutch War. However, the British got the city back a year later under the terms of a treaty.
When the Stamp Act which was regarded by Americans as an oppressive law was passed by the British parliament in 1765, the organised movement against the perceived obnoxious law started in the city of New York. The series of events that followed the activities of this movement culminated in the agitation for and the eventual independence of the United States.
